Are there Storytelling Rules?
When your personal story overshadows your business story, is it okay to share?
I give a resounding YES to that.
In fact, our personal story (whether good or bad) never should be banished to the back seat.
We are a whole package. Professional. Personal. Triumphs. Mistakes. Births. Deaths. Pets. Graduations. Weddings. Especially weddings right now! I disagree strongly with those who say to keep the personal out of business.
And while we don’t want to overshare, we do business with people, not (usually) with robots, so the more we can paint a human picture of ourselves, the more people will know us, relate to us, and want to work with us. Or not. That’s the beauty of choice. And nicheing.
The talented among us will be able to create a story where they can use what is going on in their personal lives (again, both the good and the bad) to make a point that will resonate with those they want to do business with.
Let me know of a time when you used a personal challenge or accomplishment in your business storytelling and marketing. Did it work or backfire? Will you do it again?
I share with you my very happy day.
