What Makes a Good “About Me” Page?

A good page will tell your story in a way that lets your customers know you feel their pain--you understand their problem.

It shows how you can help them.

It shares what inspires you to do what you are doing.

And It details your skills, experience, and education to position you as an authority without sounding braggy.

Your About Me page is what speaks for you when you aren’t there. Think of it as your silent salesperson.

Obviously your goal is to tell your visitor about yourself, but a good About Me page is going to make that intro while it includes your qualifications in the realm of how you can help your customer and solve her problems.

It includes your Founder’s story, your education, your past work experience (even the years you toiled in a boring accounting job or spent as an au pair), rolls it up with your passions, and sells you as the obvious choice--all without sounding braggy or salesy.

When I go to a website, the very first thing I do is look at the About Me page, even before I read the Home page. People don't do business with companies: they do business with people. You've heard that line a million times, but it really rings true.

People want to know:

  • who you are

  • what you represent

  • what your values are

  • how you got started

  • how you can help them.

So in your text, do just that--mention who your customer is, identify what her problem is because she wants to know that you "get" her, show how you can fix her problems, and explain why you are qualified to do so.

And let your personality shine right through.
